This French town at the foot of the Pyrenees is the most important international centre of modern Christian pilgrimage. It was here that a girl called Bernadette, born in 1844, had a series of visions of Mary the mother of Jesus between February 11th and July 16th 1858. There were eighteen appearances in all. Each took place at the Grotto of Massabiele. The first occurred when Bernadette was playing with two friends. They had gone ahead of her along the river bank and she was about to follow when she became aware of a movement in the grotto, then of a golden cloud of light, and finally, to quote Bernadette, of 'a lady, young and beautiful, exceedingly beautiful, the like of whom 1 had not seen before.'

Story of Bernadette

Every year people from all over the world make a pilgimage
To Lourdes, to see where Our Lady appeared to Bernadette
Many sick people have been cured as a result of bathing in the
waters at Our Lady's Grotto
On the 8th of September 2005 eighteen of us from our Parish in
Harlow made our pilgrimage to Lourdes in France in the heart
of the Pyrenees,we stayed in "Our Lady of Promise"Hotel near
the Grotto.
Here is some photographs of all of us and the lovely time
we had there.
